In the US, there are giant youth sports organizations, tens of thousands of gyms, and hundreds of thousands of athletic fields, yet the facts and stats clearly demonstrate that barely any of us get enough vigorous exercise.  

Somehow, we have sucked the fun out of sports; they have become overly competitive, costly, pressurized, and highly specialized. Furthermore, most adults view the internet, gaming, social media, and mobile phones as mindshare competition that simply beats old school neighborhood recreation...and perhaps they should. Until Pokémon Go, exercise, mobile phones, and fun were barely mentioned in the same sentence.

We could go on building the sports industrial complex, replacing worn out couches, fighting technology, and pressuring our children to become D1 college athletes or (worse) pros, or we can build an alternate reality where vigorous fun can be found around every corner.

Using modern technology and by leveraging the exploding overabundance of underutilized mall, mill, warehouse, office, retail, and even recreation space, we can invent new and exciting ways to put spontaneity and safe fun back into recreation...for everyone.

 

Hello.  My name is Bruce Warila.  I have been building technology, brands, and startups for the last twenty-five years.  I am also a dedicated soccer dad with four kids.

I am starting Atomic Recreation as a for-profit, mission-driven, public-benefit corporation (a ‘B’ corp), to create, uncover, and spread the innovations that compel people everywhere to frequently and vigorously participate in recreational activities.

Atomic Recreation will operate a recreation innovation laboratory to validate our assumptions, to iterate on our plans and designs, and to teach what we learn. Ultimately, we will license the brands, technologies, and knowhow that compel people everywhere to frequently and vigorously participate in recreational activities.

ACTIVITIES 

Until now, sports and activities were organized around scarce resources such as the availability of fields, courts, coaches, referees, transportation, and disposable income; this drove bureaucracy, specialization, and the decline in participation. Using technology, there is an unprecedented opportunity to erase scarcity, change the rules, and lower the barriers to making participation for everyone...compelling, spontaneous, and vigorous.

SPACE

There is a nationwide overabundance of underutilized big-box, retail, mill, warehouse, office, and community space. When property owners and entrepreneurs can readily acquire evidence of viability, business models, software, engineered structure designs, and modular space plans, they will readily convert this space into tech-enabled, community-driven, multi-use recreation space.

TECHNOLOGY

Software will enable sports and activities to be self-organizing, elastic, inclusive, community-driven, and competitively balanced; it will enable groups to share costs and recreation entrepreneurs to build new businesses. Augmented reality will deliver a revolution in fast, fun, self-paced activities that will challenge everything we know about engagement, interaction, and competition. While data analysis and sharing tools are already shaping designs and end-user behavior like never before.
